Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
